Shonda Rhimes wanted to man a show that she would enjoy watching,^[113] and thought it would be interesting to create a show about "smart women competing against one another".^[114]

When asked how she decided to develop a medical skådespel, Rhimes responded:

I was obsessed with the surgery channels...
